Do You Suffer From Headaches or Eye Irritation?

Extensive use of digital devices can have an adverse impact on your eye comfort. Symptoms ranging from headaches to dry or irritated eyes are typical of people suffering from digital eye strain.

What Is Digital Eye Strain & What Are Its Symptoms?

Digital eye strain is the name for several adverse symptoms of using computers, smartphones, tablets, and other devices. These symptoms include:

  • Sore, tired, burning, or itching eyes
  • Watery or dry eyes
  • Blurred or double vision
  • Headaches
  • Sensitivity to light
  • Sore neck, shoulders, or back
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Difficulty keeping your eyes open

These symptoms aren’t caused by the devices themselves so much as they result from how we use them.

Digital eye strain occurs when you spend more than 2 hours using a digital device. This screen use stresses the eyes and makes them work harder than they’re used to. This is likely because we:

  • Blink less when using computers, contributing to dry eyes and discomfort.
  • Use devices at less than ideal angles, causing neck, back, and shoulder pain.
  • Use devices with glare or reflection.
  • Use devices with poor contrast and brightness.

Treating Digital Eye Strain

In most cases, modifying your environment and changing how you use digital devices will help alleviate digital eye strain symptoms. This is especially true if you work on a computer.

If you spend many hours working at a computer, try adjusting your posture and workstation:

  • Position your screen at arm’s length away.
  • Ensure the area is well lit.
  • Avoid glare by positioning your screen away from sources of light.
  • Follow the 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds.
  • Blink often or use artificial tears to keep your eyes well lubricated.

Request an Eye Exam

Although digital eye strain does not lead to long-term complications, the symptoms are similar to more severe vision problems. A comprehensive eye exam will help us rule out other causes.

If environmental or lifestyle changes aren’t noticeably improving your digital eye strain, please request an eye exam as soon as possible. Even if we don’t find anything concerning, we can make recommendations to help provide you with relief so you can get back to work.
